The term novel food refers to novel foods or food ingredients that were not consumed to any significant extent in the European Union before 15 May 1997. In order to be authorised as a novel food, these products must be tested by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and classified as safe for human consumption. The aim of this regulation is to ensure consumer protection while promoting innovation in the food industry.
Novel foods include exotic plant extracts, new protein sources such as insect meal, algae products, fermented foods with special health benefits or biotechnologically derived ingredients.
