Things worth knowing about "Octenivet"
Octenivet is an antiseptic wound irrigation solution based on octenidine, used for cleansing and disinfecting acute and chronic wounds.
What is Octenivet?
Octenivet is an antiseptic wound irrigation solution containing the active ingredient octenidine dihydrochloride (octenidine). It is used for cleaning, irrigating, and disinfecting acute and chronic wounds. The product is available without a prescription at pharmacies and is used in both clinical settings and home wound care.
Mechanism of Action
The active ingredient octenidine belongs to the group of cationic surfactants. It exerts its antimicrobial effect by binding to the negatively charged cell membranes of bacteria, fungi, and certain viruses, disrupting their structural integrity and ultimately killing the microorganism.
- Broad-spectrum antiseptic: Effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses.
- Rapid onset of action: Antimicrobial activity begins within approximately one minute of application.
- No known resistance development: Unlike antibiotics, octenidine does not promote the development of microbial resistance.
Indications
Octenivet is used for a wide range of wound types, including:
- Acute wounds (e.g., abrasions, lacerations, first- and second-degree burns)
- Chronic wounds (e.g., diabetic foot syndrome, pressure ulcers, venous leg ulcers)
- Post-operative wounds
- Infected or infection-prone wounds
Application and Dosage
The solution is applied directly to the wound surface or wound dressing, or used to irrigate wound cavities. A contact time of at least one minute is recommended to ensure adequate antiseptic efficacy. Octenivet is available in various package sizes (e.g., 50 ml, 250 ml, 1000 ml).
Important: Octenivet must not be injected into body cavities without free drainage (e.g., abdominal or joint cavities), as tissue irritation may occur.
Side Effects
Octenivet is generally well tolerated. The following side effects may occasionally occur:
- Local skin irritation or burning sensation at the application site
- Hypersensitivity reactions (very rare)
- Temporary discoloration of the wound or surrounding tissue
Advantages Over Other Antiseptics
Compared to antiseptics such as povidone-iodine or hydrogen peroxide, octenidine demonstrates better compatibility with human cells -- particularly fibroblasts (connective tissue cells) and keratinocytes (skin cells) -- which supports wound healing. Cytotoxic effects are minimal when the product is used as directed.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to octenidine dihydrochloride or any of the excipients
- Application in deep, non-draining wound cavities without free outflow
- Not suitable for use on the eardrum or near the middle ear
