Osteoblasten sind spezialisierte Zellen des Knochens, die für den Aufbau neuer Knochensubstanz verantwortlich sind.
Osteoblasten entstehen aus mesenchymalen Stammzellen und bilden gemeinsam mit Osteozyten und Osteoklasten das zelluläre Grundsystem des Knochenstoffwechsels. Ihre Hauptaufgabe ist es, Kollagenfasern und die Knochengrundsubstanz (Osteoid) zu produzieren, die anschließend mit Kalzium und Phosphat mineralisiert wird.
Die Aktivität der Osteoblasten ist besonders wichtig während des Wachstums, nach Frakturen und bei der Knochenheilung. Sie werden unter anderem durch Vitamin D, Östrogene, Parathormon und mechanische Reize aktiviert. Ein gestörtes Gleichgewicht zwischen Osteoblasten (Knochenaufbau) und Osteoklasten (Knochenabbau) kann zu Erkrankungen wie Osteoporose führen, bei der die Knochensubstanz zunehmend verloren geht.
Osteoblasten spielen auch eine Rolle in der Hormonregulation. Sie beeinflussen über bestimmte Botenstoffe (z. B. Osteocalcin) den Kalziumhaushalt und sogar den Energiestoffwechsel. Ihre Funktion ist ein zentraler Ansatzpunkt für Therapien zur Knochengesundheit, z. B. durch Vitamin-D-Supplementierung, Bewegung oder medikamentöse Osteoanabolika.
