Structure and How It Works

In a parallel trial, participants are randomly assigned (randomized) to one of the study groups. One group receives the treatment being tested (the intervention group), while the other group receives a standard treatment, a placebo, or no treatment at all (the control group). Both groups are observed during the same time period, which ensures that external influencing factors affect all groups equally.

Parallel trials are particularly appropriate when switching treatments is not feasible or ethically justifiable, or when so-called carry-over effects (residual effects of one treatment influencing the next) need to be avoided.
