Things worth knowing about "Rutoside"
Rutoside is a naturally occurring flavonoid known for its vascular-strengthening properties. It is commonly used in the treatment of venous disorders and oedema.
What is Rutoside?
Rutoside (also known as rutin) is a plant-derived bioflavonoid found naturally in a wide range of plants, including buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), citrus fruits, elderberries, and various herbs. Chemically, it is a glycoside of the flavonol quercetin and belongs to the broader group of flavonoids. In medicine, rutoside is used both in its natural plant-based form and as a synthesized compound. It is classified as a venotonic agent – a substance that strengthens and supports venous function.
Mechanism of Action
Rutoside exerts its therapeutic effects through several biochemical pathways:
- Capillary sealing: Rutoside reduces the permeability of capillary walls, limiting the leakage of fluid into surrounding tissue.
- Vascular strengthening: It increases the resistance of small blood vessels (capillary resistance) to mechanical stress.
- Antioxidant activity: As a free radical scavenger, rutoside protects vascular walls from oxidative damage.
- Anti-inflammatory effects: It inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators, thereby reducing local inflammation.
- Antiplatelet activity: Rutoside mildly inhibits platelet aggregation, improving the rheological properties of blood flow.
Medical Indications
Rutoside is primarily used in conditions associated with impaired microcirculation and increased vascular permeability:
- Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI): Weakness of the venous valves leading to blood pooling in the legs
- Oedema: Fluid accumulation in tissue, particularly in the lower limbs
- Haemorrhoids: Enlarged vascular cushions in the anal region
- Lymphoedema: Impaired lymphatic drainage
- Microcirculatory disorders: Reduced blood flow in small vessels
- Diabetic retinopathy: As a supportive therapy for vascular changes in the eye associated with diabetes
Dosage and Administration
Rutoside is available in various formulations including tablets, capsules, gels, and topical creams. The typical oral daily dose ranges from 300 to 1,000 mg, depending on the product and indication. Dosing should always follow the product label or a healthcare professional's recommendation. Rutoside may be used over extended periods, with regular medical check-ups advised during long-term use.
Side Effects and Tolerability
Rutoside is generally considered well tolerated. Possible side effects include:
- Gastrointestinal complaints such as nausea, heartburn, or diarrhoea
- Headaches
- Skin reactions (rare), particularly with topical use
- Allergic reactions in individuals with known hypersensitivity to flavonoids
The use of rutoside during pregnancy should be discussed with a healthcare provider, as safety data in pregnancy are not fully established.
Interactions
Rutoside may potentially enhance the effects of anticoagulants such as warfarin. Patients taking blood-thinning medications should therefore seek medical advice before using rutoside. In addition, rutoside may support the absorption of vitamin C and act synergistically with other antioxidants.
