Ticks are small, blood-sucking arachnids belonging to the order Ixodida. They are found worldwide, especially in forests, tall grass, and shrubby areas. In Germany and Central Europe, the common castor bean tick (Ixodes ricinus) is the most prevalent species. Ticks feed on the blood of vertebrates, including humans, dogs, cats, and wild animals.
Ticks go through four developmental stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Each post-egg stage requires a blood meal before the tick can develop further. This life cycle can span several years.
Ticks are vectors, meaning they can transmit pathogens to their hosts. In Central Europe, two diseases are of particular importance:
Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is one of the most common tick-borne illnesses in Europe. A characteristic early sign is a ring-shaped skin redness called erythema migrans around the bite site. If left untreated, the disease can affect the joints, nervous system, and heart.
Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection transmitted by certain tick species. It can lead to inflammation of the brain and meninges. An effective vaccine is available and recommended for people living in or traveling to high-risk areas.
After coming into contact with a host, ticks seek out warm, thin-skinned areas such as the back of the knees, armpits, the hairline, and the groin. They cut into the skin and feed on blood, often secreting a local anesthetic so the host does not feel the bite.
If a tick is found, it should be removed as quickly as possible. The shorter the tick remains attached, the lower the risk of pathogen transmission.
