What Are Warts?

Warts are benign skin growths caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). They can appear on almost any part of the body and are generally harmless, but often bothersome or cosmetically unwanted. Warts are contagious and can spread through direct skin contact or indirectly via shared surfaces.

Types of Warts

• Common warts (Verrucae vulgares): Hard, rough bumps most often found on the hands and fingers.
• Plantar warts: Located on the soles of the feet and may grow inward due to walking pressure.
• Flat warts (Verrucae planae): Small, flat-topped growths commonly found on the face or legs.
• Genital warts (Condylomata acuminata): Sexually transmitted, cauliflower-shaped warts in the genital area.
• Molluscum contagiosum: Smooth, dome-shaped bumps, particularly common in children.

Wart Removal Methods

Cryotherapy (Freezing)

Cryotherapy involves applying liquid nitrogen (approximately -196 degrees Celsius) to freeze the wart tissue. The treated area eventually dies and falls off within a few days. The procedure is performed in a medical office and may require multiple sessions. Over-the-counter freezing sprays are also available for home use, though they are less potent.

Laser Therapy

Using a CO2 laser or Nd:YAG laser, wart tissue is precisely vaporized. This method is particularly effective for stubborn or extensive warts and is typically performed by a dermatologist. It is minimally invasive and usually leaves minimal scarring.

Electrosurgery (Electrocautery)

In electrosurgical treatment, an electric current is used to destroy the wart tissue. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and is effective for various wart types.

Surgical Excision

Surgical removal involves cutting out the wart with a scalpel. This is typically reserved for large or deeply rooted warts. Local anesthesia is required, and a small scar may remain.

Salicylic Acid Therapy

Salicylic acid preparations (patches, solutions, gels) gradually break down the thickened wart tissue. Available over the counter, this method is suitable for home use but requires patience and consistent application over several weeks.

Immunotherapy

For recurrent or treatment-resistant warts, immunomodulatory therapy may be used, such as imiquimod cream or interferon injections. These treatments boost the body´s immune response against HPV.

Home Remedies and Alternative Approaches

Some people try home remedies such as apple cider vinegar or tea tree oil. Scientific evidence for these approaches is limited; when in doubt, a medical professional should always be consulted.

When to See a Doctor

A medical consultation is recommended if:

• the wart grows rapidly or changes in appearance,
• pain, bleeding, or signs of infection occur,
• the wart is located on the face, genitals, or under a nail,
• home treatments show no improvement after several weeks,
• the patient has diabetes or a compromised immune system.

Aftercare and Prevention

After wart removal, the treated area should be kept clean and dry. To prevent reinfection or spreading, the following measures are recommended:

• Do not share towels or nail scissors,
• Wear flip-flops in public pools and showers,
• Cover any cuts or skin injuries consistently,
• Consider HPV vaccination to protect against certain virus strains (especially recommended for adolescents and young adults).
