Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. However, the small and large intestine are most commonly affected. The disease progresses in episodes, with symptom-free phases alternating with acute inflammation. The exact cause is unclear, but a combination of genetic factors, dysregulation of the immune system and environmental factors is suspected.
Typical symptoms of Crohn's disease include abdominal pain, diarrhoea (often without blood), weight loss and fatigue. Other signs may include fever, bloating and loss of appetite. In severe cases, fistulas, abscesses or a narrowing of the intestine can occur. The disease can also cause symptoms outside the intestine, such as inflammation of the joints, skin, eyes or liver.
Chronic inflammation can lead to nutrient deficiencies, including iron deficiency, which is often due to increased demand or reduced absorption in the inflamed intestine. Iron deficiency manifests itself in symptoms such as fatigue, weakness and concentration problems. In such cases, iron supplements or infusions may be necessary. Lactoferrin, an iron-binding protein, could have a supportive effect here, as it promotes iron absorption and has anti-inflammatory properties.
Treatment of Crohn's disease depends on the severity of the disease and includes anti-inflammatory drugs such as corticosteroids, immunosuppressants or biologics. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove affected sections of the bowel. A personalised diet is also important to prevent nutrient deficiencies and alleviate symptoms. Sufferers should avoid foods that are difficult to digest or cause bloating and take nutritional supplements if necessary.
Crohn's disease cannot be cured, but early diagnosis and treatment can help to control symptoms and improve quality of life. Regular visits to the doctor and holistic management, which includes drug therapy, nutrition and stress management, are essential to positively influence the course of the disease.
