Erysipelas, also known as erysipelas, is a bacterial skin infection that is usually caused by streptococci.
Wound erysipelas primarily affects the upper layers of the skin and the lymphatic system and is characterised by sudden, sharply defined redness, swelling and overheating of the skin. The legs, face or arms are often affected. This can be accompanied by fever, chills, headaches and a general feeling of illness.
The bacteria usually enter the body through small skin injuries, cracks or wounds. People with weakened immune systems, diabetes, chronic skin diseases (e.g. fungal infections or eczema) or lymph congestion are particularly at risk.Treatment is usually with antibiotics, usually penicillin, to quickly contain the infection and prevent serious complications such as blood poisoning (septicaemia) or lymphatic drainage disorders. It is also recommended that the affected site is elevated and cooled to reduce swelling. For prevention, it is important to take good care of the skin and treat minor injuries or fungal infections quickly. Lactoferrin may play a supportive role in the prevention of erysipelas as it has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. Lactoferrin is a protein that binds iron, which is essential for the growth of many bacteria, and can therefore inhibit the multiplication of pathogens. It also strengthens the immune system so that infections can be better defended against.""
