Adequate folic acid levels in the body are particularly important during pregnancy, as it promotes the development of the unborn child and can reduce the risk of miscarriage. Folic acid is also important for heart health, the immune system and blood formation.
Folic acid is found in many foods, especially green leafy vegetables, pulses, wholemeal products and citrus fruits. However, as it is often difficult to get the required amount from food alone, folic acid is an important component of dietary supplements.Both folic acid and iron are crucial for the formation of healthy red blood cells. Iron is needed for the production of haemoglobin, the protein that transports oxygen in the red blood cells. Folic acid, on the other hand, is needed to prevent anaemia (anaemia), which occurs when the body does not produce enough healthy red blood cells. A lack of folic acid leads to poor cell division and therefore insufficient haematopoiesis. A combination of iron and folic acid can therefore be particularly helpful in the treatment and prevention of anaemia, especially in pregnant women who have an increased need for both nutrients.
