Kytta Ointment is a herbal medicine containing comfrey root extract, used topically to relieve muscle and joint pain, bruises, and sprains.
What is Kytta Ointment?
Kytta Ointment is an over-the-counter herbal medicine for external use. Its active ingredient is a dry extract from the root of comfrey (Symphytum officinale). It is widely used in German-speaking countries and is available in pharmacies without a prescription for the relief of musculoskeletal complaints.
Indications
Kytta Ointment is used for:
- Muscle pain and tension
- Joint pain, for example in osteoarthritis
- Bruises and blunt-force injuries
- Sprains and strains
- Lower back pain
Mechanism of Action
The primary active compound in comfrey root extract is allantoin, which promotes cell regeneration and has anti-inflammatory and decongestant properties. Additional bioactive substances include rosmarinic acid and other polyphenols that help inhibit inflammatory processes. Together, these compounds reduce pain, decrease swelling, and support tissue healing.
Application and Dosage
Kytta Ointment should be applied to the affected area of skin 3 to 4 times daily and gently massaged in. It must only be used on intact skin – never on open wounds or mucous membranes. The typical duration of use is up to 4 to 6 weeks. If symptoms persist, medical advice should be sought.
Side Effects and Safety
Kytta Ointment is generally well tolerated. In rare cases, skin irritation or allergic reactions may occur at the site of application. Since comfrey may contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), manufacturers aim to keep PA levels as low as possible. Important safety precautions include:
- Do not use in children under 12 years of age
- Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes
- Do not apply to damaged or inflamed skin
Scientific Evidence
Several clinical studies support the effectiveness of comfrey root extract for musculoskeletal pain. A randomized controlled trial published in Phytomedicine demonstrated significant pain reduction in patients with knee osteoarthritis treated with comfrey root ointment. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has recognized the external use of comfrey root extract as well-established in herbal medicine.
