The Complement System

Antimicrobial Peptides
Antimicrobial peptides such as defensins and cathelicidins are short protein molecules produced by skin cells, mucosal cells, and immune cells. They kill bacteria, viruses, and fungi directly by disrupting their cell membranes.
Lysozyme
Lysozyme is a natural enzyme found in tears, saliva, nasal secretions, and breast milk. It destroys the cell walls of certain bacteria and plays an important role in the first line of the body's defense.
Innate and Adaptive Immunity
Natural immune defense substances are deployed in both the innate (non-specific) immune response and the adaptive (specific) immune response. The innate immune system reacts quickly and broadly to a wide range of pathogens, while the adaptive immune system mounts a targeted response against specific antigens and forms an immunological memory for future protection.
Factors That Influence Natural Immune Defense
The production and effectiveness of natural immune defense substances can be affected by several factors:
- Nutrition: Deficiencies in vitamins (e.g., vitamin C, vitamin D) and minerals (e.g., zinc, selenium) can weaken immune function.
- Sleep: Adequate sleep is essential for immune system recovery and the production of defense substances.

Clinical Significance
A deficiency or malfunction of natural immune defense substances can lead to immunodeficiency disorders, making the body more vulnerable to infections. Examples include congenital immune defects such as agammaglobulinemia (absence of antibodies) and acquired conditions such as immune suppression in HIV infection. Conversely, an overactive or misdirected immune response can result in autoimmune diseases or allergic reactions.
