NB.1.8.1 is a descendant of the XEC lineage and carries distinct mutations in the spike protein compared to earlier Omicron subvariants. These mutations influence how the virus binds to human cells and how effectively it can evade immune responses.
Origin and Classification
NB.1.8.1 was first detected at significant levels in Asia, particularly in China and other East Asian countries. The variant emerged through a series of recombination and mutation events within the broader Omicron family.
