However, their axon terminals do not form classical synapses with other nerve cells. Instead, they end near blood vessels, where neurohormones are released into the circulation and transported to distant target organs.

- Parvocellular neurosecretory cells: Produce releasing and inhibiting hormones (e.g., CRH, TRH, GnRH) that regulate hormone secretion by the anterior pituitary (adenohypophysis).

Neurosecretory cells govern a wide range of vital physiological processes, including:
