The oral mucosa lines the entire oral cavity and serves as a crucial protective barrier between the external environment and the body’s interior.
It consists of stratified squamous epithelium and a connective tissue layer (lamina propria) rich in blood vessels and immune cells. This structure enables the mucosa to withstand mechanical stress and microbial exposure while maintaining a high capacity for regeneration.
In addition to protection, the oral mucosa contributes to immune defense, sensation (temperature and pain), digestion (via saliva interaction), and speech formation. Certain regions, such as the gingiva and hard palate, are keratinized and more resistant, whereas the cheeks and inner lips are non-keratinized and flexible, allowing ease of movement for speech and chewing.
Diseases of the oral mucosa are common, including inflammation (stomatitis), fungal infections, aphthae, and precancerous lesions. A healthy mucosa appears smooth, pink, and moist, redness, swelling, or pain indicate pathology. Good oral hygiene, adequate hydration, and a vitamin-rich diet are essential for maintaining mucosal integrity.
