What Is Remission?
Remission is a medical term used to describe a state in which the symptoms of a disease significantly decrease or disappear entirely. It is most commonly used in the context of chronic illnesses such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel diseases (e.g., Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis). Remission does not necessarily mean a complete cure; rather, it indicates a stabilization or regression of the disease.
Types of Remission
Complete Remission
Complete remission occurs when no measurable signs of disease can be detected. In oncology, this means that imaging studies and laboratory tests no longer show evidence of tumor cells. However, a complete remission does not guarantee that the disease will not return.
Partial Remission
Partial remission is defined as a significant reduction in disease signs or tumor size, without full disappearance. In cancer treatment, a reduction in tumor size of at least 50% is generally classified as partial remission.
Spontaneous Remission
In rare cases, a disease may regress without any medical treatment. This phenomenon, known as spontaneous remission, is not yet fully understood and remains an active area of medical research.

In oncology, achieving remission is a primary treatment goal. After chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or immunotherapy, follow-up examinations are conducted to determine whether complete or partial remission has been achieved. Remission in Chronic Inflammatory Diseases
In conditions such as Crohn's disease or rheumatoid arthritis, treatment aims to achieve and maintain long-term remission by minimizing inflammation and symptoms. Modern therapies, including biologics, have significantly improved remission rates in these conditions.
Remission in Mental Health Conditions
The term remission is also used in psychiatry, for example in the context of depression or bipolar disorder. In this setting, it describes the substantial resolution of symptoms and a return to normal daily functioning.
Diagnosis and Assessment of Remission
The assessment of remission varies depending on the condition and may involve:
- Laboratory tests: e.g., blood counts, tumor markers, inflammatory markers (CRP, ESR)
- Imaging studies: e.g., MRI, CT scan, PET scan to evaluate tumor regression
- Endoscopy: e.g., in bowel diseases to directly assess mucosal healing
- Clinical scoring systems: standardized scales used in rheumatology or psychiatry to evaluate disease activity
Remission vs. Cure
It is important to distinguish between remission and a complete cure. While a cure implies the permanent elimination of a disease without any risk of recurrence, remission means the disease could return at any time. For this reason, regular follow-up examinations during remission are essential to detect a potential relapse as early as possible.
