Red blood cells are the most abundant cells in the blood and serve the vital function of transporting oxygen from the lungs to the body tissues while carrying carbon dioxide back to the lungs. Reference Values
Normal RBC count values differ by sex and age:
- Men: 4.5 – 5.9 million per microliter (Mio./µl)
- Women: 4.1 – 5.1 million per microliter (Mio./µl)

Diagnosis
The red blood cell count is determined as part of a complete blood count (CBC). A blood sample is drawn from a vein, typically in the crook of the arm, and analyzed using automated cell-counting equipment. Additional parameters such as hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV (mean corpuscular volume), and MCH (mean corpuscular hemoglobin) are measured simultaneously to help identify the specific type and cause of any blood disorder.
