Hawthorn berries (Fructus Crataegi) are the bright red fruits of the hawthorn tree (Crataegus monogyna or Crataegus laevigata) and have long been used in traditional European herbal medicine to support heart and circulatory function. Unlike the more commonly monographed leaves and flowers, the berries are especially rich in oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) – potent antioxidants that help improve vascular integrity, microcirculation, and oxygen delivery to the heart.
Hawthorn berries have a mild tonic effect on the heart, making them useful for age-related cardiac weakness, slight shortness of breath on exertion, or low blood pressure. The flavonoids and anthocyanins in the fruit also help reduce oxidative stress, stabilize capillaries, and support cardiovascular health.
Although official EMA monographs focus on the leaf and flower, hawthorn berries are widely used in traditional remedies – especially in powdered form or as part of heart tonics – and are valued for their gentle, long-term effect on cardiovascular resilience.
Common uses of hawthorn berries:
- Mild age-related cardiac insufficiency
- Promotion of microcirculation and oxygenation
- Vascular protection against oxidative stress
- Regulation of slightly low or high blood pressure
- Nervous palpitations and stress-related heart tension
Key active compounds:
- Oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs)
- Flavonoids (hyperoside, rutin)
- Anthocyanins
- Triterpenes
- Tannins, phenolic acids
