What Is the Hemoglobin Level?
The hemoglobin level (also written as haemoglobin level or abbreviated as Hb level) indicates how much hemoglobin is present per deciliter of blood. Hemoglobin is an iron-containing protein found in red blood cells (erythrocytes). Its primary function is to transport oxygen from the lungs to the organs and tissues throughout the body, and to carry carbon dioxide back to the lungs for exhalation. The Hb level is a core component of a complete blood count (CBC) and is routinely measured during blood tests.
Normal Values
Normal hemoglobin values differ by age and sex:
- Men: 13.5 – 17.5 g/dL
- Women: 12.0 – 16.0 g/dL
- Pregnant women: from approximately 11.0 g/dL (physiologically lower)
- Children: between 11.0 and 16.0 g/dL, depending on age
These reference ranges can vary slightly between laboratories. The unit of measurement is typically grams per deciliter (g/dL) or grams per liter (g/L).
Low Hemoglobin Level (Anemia)
A low hemoglobin level indicates anemia, a condition in which the blood does not carry enough oxygen to meet the body's needs. Depending on severity, symptoms may include:
- Fatigue and exhaustion
- Paleness of the skin and mucous membranes
- Shortness of breath and dizziness
- Rapid heartbeat (palpitations)
- Difficulty concentrating and headaches
Common causes of a low hemoglobin level include:
- Iron deficiency – the most common cause of anemia
- Vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency
- Chronic diseases (e.g., kidney disease, chronic inflammation)
- Blood loss due to injury, surgery, or heavy menstruation

High Hemoglobin Level (Polycythemia)
An elevated hemoglobin level may indicate a condition called polycythemia or erythrocytosis. Possible causes include:
- Chronic oxygen deficiency (e.g., due to lung disease or high altitude)
- Heavy smoking
- Dehydration
- Polycythemia vera (a bone marrow disorder)
- Use of erythropoietin (EPO) or anabolic steroids (doping)
How Is the Hemoglobin Level Measured?
The hemoglobin level is measured from a simple blood sample — either from a vein (venipuncture) or a fingertip (capillary blood) — and analyzed in a laboratory. It is part of the standard complete blood count (CBC) and can be included in nearly any routine medical check-up. Modern analyzers deliver results within minutes.
Clinical Significance and Treatment
Treatment for an abnormal hemoglobin level always depends on the underlying cause. Iron deficiency anemia is commonly treated with iron supplementation, either orally or intravenously. In cases of severe anemia, a blood transfusion may be necessary. A persistently elevated hemoglobin level is managed through therapeutic phlebotomy (blood removal), medication, or treatment of the underlying condition. Regular follow-up blood tests are essential to detect and address changes in the hemoglobin level early.
