Health Risks and Toxicity
Hydrogen chloride gas is irritating and corrosive. Inhalation can cause significant damage to the respiratory tract, eyes, and mucous membranes. The severity of health effects depends on the concentration and duration of exposure:
- Low concentrations: Irritation of eyes and airways, coughing
- Moderate concentrations: Burning sensation in throat and lungs, shortness of breath
- High concentrations: Severe chemical burns to the airways, pulmonary edema, life-threatening conditions
Skin contact with liquid hydrochloric acid causes chemical burns. First aid measures include immediate rinsing with large amounts of water and seeking medical attention promptly.
Diagnosis and Treatment Following Exposure
If hydrogen chloride poisoning is suspected, a physician or poison control center should be contacted immediately. Treatment is symptom-based and may include:
- Moving the affected person to fresh air and away from the source
- Removing contaminated clothing and rinsing affected skin with water
- Oxygen therapy and intensive care if breathing difficulties occur
