Pulpitis is a painful inflammation of the dental nerve caused by tooth decay or dental injuries. Find out more about the symptoms, causes and treatment options.
Pulpitis is an inflammatory disease of the dental pulp that can be caused by deep caries, dental injuries or repeated dental procedures. The dental pulp contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue, which is why inflammation is often associated with severe toothache.
Pulpitis can occur in two forms:
- Reversible pulpitis: The dental nerve is irritated but not yet irreversibly damaged. Symptoms are short, stabbing pains, especially in response to cold or sweet foods, which subside after removal of the irritant.
- Irreversible pulpitis: The inflammation is advanced and leads to persistent, intense toothache, which often occurs without external stimuli. The dental pulp begins to die, which can lead to infection and possibly the formation of a tooth root abscess.
The treatment depends on the stage of inflammation. Reversible pulpitis can be stopped by a tooth filling or caries treatment to eliminate the irritation. In the case of irreversible pulpitis, root canal treatment is usually required to remove the infected pulp and preserve the tooth. In severe cases or with severe infections, tooth extraction may be necessary.
For the prevention of pulpitis, profound oral hygiene, regular visits to the dentist and a healthy diet are essential. Protecting the enamel structure early on with fluoride toothpaste and reducing sugary foods helps to reduce the risk of tooth decay and prevent inflammation inside the teeth.
