Retinoids: vitamin A derivatives for cell renewal, acne therapy and anti-ageing
Retinoids are chemical compounds that are structurally related to vitamin A and have a targeted effect on skin cells. They are among the most effective active ingredients in dermatology and are used for acne, hyperpigmentation, psoriasis as well as for preventing premature skin ageing. The best-known retinoids include tretinoin (prescription only), adapalene, isotretinoin and retinol (over-the-counter). They work by activating cellular receptors that control processes such as cell renewal, collagen formation and sebum regulation.
Retinoids accelerate the desquamation of dead skin cells and simultaneously promote the formation of new, healthy cells. This makes them particularly effective in the treatment of hormonal acne, blackheads and clogged pores. They also stimulate collagen synthesis, resulting in a smoother skin texture and a reduction in fine lines. However, retinoids are not non-irritating - redness, dryness or flaky skin can occur, especially at the beginning of application. A slow phase-in period and combination with moisturising skincare are therefore essential.
Holistic approaches are becoming increasingly important in modern skincare. In addition to external application, systemic influencing factors such as intestinal health, hormonal balance and silent inflammation are also coming into focus. This is where lactoferrin can have a supportive effect - a multifunctional protein that has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and immunomodulating effects. Studies have shown that lactoferrin can positively influence inflammatory skin processes - such as acne - and support the balance of skin flora, which complements the effect of retinoids.Literature references:- Mukherjee, S. et al (2006).
