Terephthalylidene dicamphorsulfonic acid is a synthetic UV filter used in sunscreen products to protect the skin from harmful UVA radiation.
What is Terephthalylidene Dicamphorsulfonic Acid?
Terephthalylidene dicamphorsulfonic acid (INCI name: Ecamsule, trade name: Mexoryl SX) is a synthetic, organic UV filter specifically developed to protect the skin against UVA radiation. It belongs to the camphor derivative class of UV filters and is approved for use in cosmetic sunscreen products in the European Union and several other countries.
Mechanism of Action
Terephthalylidene dicamphorsulfonic acid absorbs UV radiation in the UVA range, covering approximately 290 to 400 nanometers, with a peak absorption at around 345 nm. By absorbing these UV photons, the compound prevents them from penetrating the skin, where they could otherwise cause DNA damage, oxidative stress, and premature skin aging.
A key characteristic of this UV filter is its water solubility, which distinguishes it from most other organic UV filters. This property allows it to be readily incorporated into water-based formulations and ensures even distribution across the skin surface.
Applications and Uses
Terephthalylidene dicamphorsulfonic acid is used exclusively in cosmetic sun protection products, including:
- Sunscreen creams and lotions
- After-sun products
- Daily moisturizers with SPF
- Tinted sunscreen formulations
It is frequently combined with UVB-absorbing filters such as octyl methoxycinnamate or avobenzone to provide broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB radiation.
Regulatory Status and Permitted Concentration
In the European Union, terephthalylidene dicamphorsulfonic acid is listed in Annex VI of EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 as an approved UV filter, with a maximum concentration of 10% in finished products. In the United States, Ecamsule has been approved by the FDA under a New Drug Application (NDA) for specific La Roche-Posay branded products, where it is subject to separate regulatory oversight as an OTC drug ingredient.
Safety and Tolerability
When used as directed, terephthalylidene dicamphorsulfonic acid is considered well-tolerated and skin-compatible. Due to its water-soluble nature, the compound shows minimal penetration through the outermost skin layer (stratum corneum), resulting in very low systemic absorption.
Potential adverse reactions may include, in rare cases:
- Mild skin irritation or redness in individuals with very sensitive skin
- Contact allergic reactions (uncommon)
Individuals with known allergies to camphor derivatives should carefully review product labels and consult a dermatologist if in doubt.
Importance for Sun Protection
Effective sun protection requires broad-spectrum coverage against both UVA and UVB radiation. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin than UVB rays and are a primary cause of premature skin aging and contribute to the development of skin cancer. As an efficient UVA filter, terephthalylidene dicamphorsulfonic acid plays an important role in comprehensive photoprotection strategies.
