What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic acid (also known as hyaluronan or hyaluronate) is a naturally occurring polysaccharide – a type of sugar molecule – found in almost every tissue of the human body. It is especially concentrated in the skin, joints, connective tissue, and the vitreous humor of the eye. Hyaluronic acid is renowned for its exceptional ability to retain water: a single molecule can hold up to one thousand times its own weight in water.
Biological Functions
Hyaluronic acid performs a wide range of important roles in the body:
- Moisture retention: In the skin, it maintains elasticity, firmness, and hydration.
- Joint protection: In synovial fluid, hyaluronic acid acts as a lubricant and shock absorber, protecting cartilage from wear and tear.

Depending on the product and treatment area, results typically last between six months and two years. Hyaluronic acid is also a popular active ingredient in skincare products such as creams, serums, and masks, delivering topical hydration to the skin.
Orthopedics and Rheumatology
In joint conditions such as osteoarthritis, hyaluronic acid can be injected directly into the affected joint space – a procedure known as viscosupplementation. The goal is to supplement the natural synovial fluid, reduce pain, and improve mobility. This approach is most commonly used for knee osteoarthritis.
Ophthalmology
In ophthalmology, hyaluronic acid is used in eye drops to treat dry eye syndrome. It is also used as a viscoelastic agent during surgical procedures such as cataract surgery.
Nutrition and Dietary Supplements
Hyaluronic acid is available as an oral dietary supplement. Studies suggest that oral supplementation may improve skin hydration and relieve joint discomfort, though the evidence is still developing. Typical dosages used in clinical studies range from 80 to 200 mg per day.
Mechanism of Action
Hyaluronic acid binds to body cells through specific receptors, most notably the CD44 receptor, which is present on numerous cell types and mediates a variety of biological effects including cell adhesion, cell migration, and inflammatory regulation. Its strong water-binding capacity also contributes to tissue hydration and the maintenance of the extracellular matrix.
Natural Sources and Production
The body naturally produces hyaluronic acid, but production declines with age – which contributes to reduced skin moisture and joint discomfort over time. For medical and cosmetic purposes, hyaluronic acid is now primarily manufactured through bacterial fermentation, enabling a vegan-friendly and highly purified production process.
Safety and Side Effects
Hyaluronic acid is generally considered safe and well-tolerated. Topical application rarely causes side effects. Injectable forms may cause local reactions such as redness, swelling, or tenderness at the injection site, which typically resolve within a few days. Rare complications include granuloma formation or vascular events if injections are administered incorrectly. No serious side effects have been reported with oral supplementation.
