The acetabulum is a cup-shaped cavity in the pelvis that receives the head of the femur (thighbone), forming the hip joint. Acetabular Dysplasia

If untreated, it commonly leads to early-onset hip osteoarthritis. Treatment ranges from abduction bracing in infants to corrective pelvic osteotomy in older children and adults.
Acetabular Impingement (FAI)
Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is a condition in which abnormal contact occurs between the femoral head and the acetabulum during hip movement. The pincer type involves over-coverage of the femoral head by the acetabulum. This leads to pain, restricted range of motion, and over time causes cartilage damage and arthritis.
Acetabular Component in Hip Replacement
During total hip arthroplasty (THA), the acetabular component (cup) is implanted into the acetabulum. It is typically made of metal and lined with a bearing surface of polyethylene, ceramic, or metal. Correct positioning of this component is critical for the function and longevity of the prosthesis.
Diagnosis of Acetabular Pathologies
Several imaging methods are used to assess the acetabulum:

- Surgical: Open reduction and internal fixation for fractures, pelvic osteotomy for dysplasia, hip arthroscopy for FAI, and total hip replacement for advanced osteoarthritis
