Neurodermatitis, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterised by dry, itchy and reddened patches of skin. It often occurs in childhood, but can also affect adults. Atopic dermatitis progresses in episodes in which symptom-free phases alternate with acute symptoms.
The exact causes of atopic dermatitis are not fully understood, but genetic predisposition, a disturbed skin barrier and an overreaction of the immune system play a key role. Trigger factors such as stress, allergens (e.g. pollen or house dust mites), certain foods, climatic conditions or chemical irritants can exacerbate the symptoms.
Typical symptoms of atopic dermatitis are very itchy skin rashes, especially in the bends of the arms and legs, on the neck and face. Frequent scratching further damages the skin, which can lead to weeping or crusted eczema. In addition, the skin of atopic dermatitis patients is particularly susceptible to infections caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi.
Treatment aims to alleviate the symptoms and strengthen the skin barrier. This includes regular care with moisturising creams or ointments that improve the skin's moisture content, as well as anti-inflammatory medication such as corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors. In severe cases, systemic therapies such as immunosuppressants or biologics may be necessary.
Nutrition also plays an important role. Nutrients such as lactoferrin can be helpful as they have an anti-inflammatory effect and support skin health. In addition, compensating for deficiencies, such as iron deficiency, can help to improve the general condition, as this can impair immune function.
In order to prevent and alleviate symptoms, it is important to avoid trigger factors and ensure good skin care. Regular baths with moisturising additives, mild cleansing products and clothing made from soft, breathable materials can help to protect the skin. Atopic dermatitis requires holistic management in order to improve the quality of life of those affected and minimise acute flare-ups.
