What Does Anti-inflammatory Mean?
Anti-inflammatory is a medical term that literally means inflammation-reducing. It describes the property of substances, foods, medications, or therapeutic measures to inhibit, attenuate, or completely suppress inflammatory processes in the human body. Inflammation is a natural defense response of the immune system, but when it becomes chronic, it can contribute to numerous diseases.
Inflammation – The Basics
Inflammation is a response of the immune system to harmful stimuli such as pathogens, damaged cells, or toxic substances. It is characterized by the classic signs: redness, swelling, heat, pain, and impaired function. Acute inflammation is vital and protective. Chronic, low-grade inflammation, however, is associated with conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, and even cancer.
Anti-inflammatory Mechanisms
Anti-inflammatory effects can be achieved through various biological pathways:
- Inhibition of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins, leukotrienes, or cytokines (e.g., TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-1beta)
- Suppression of signaling pathways such as the NF-kB pathway, a central regulator of the inflammatory response
- Reduction of oxidative stress through antioxidant mechanisms
- Modulation of the gut microbiome, which influences immune function
Anti-inflammatory Medications
In clinical medicine, several classes of medications with anti-inflammatory effects are used:
Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)
Medications such as ibuprofen, diclofenac, or naproxen inhibit the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX) and thereby reduce the production of prostaglandins. They are used for pain, fever, and inflammatory conditions.
Corticosteroids
Cortisone and its derivatives (e.g., prednisolone, dexamethasone) exert powerful anti-inflammatory effects by broadly suppressing the immune response. They are used in severe inflammation, autoimmune diseases, and allergic reactions.
Biologics and Immunomodulators
Modern biologics such as TNF-alpha inhibitors (e.g., adalimumab, etanercept) specifically target inflammatory mediators and are used in rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel diseases.
Anti-inflammatory Diet
Diet has a significant impact on the inflammatory state of the body. An anti-inflammatory diet aims to reduce chronic inflammation through targeted food choices.
Anti-inflammatory Foods
- Omega-3 fatty acids: found in fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, herring), flaxseeds, and walnuts – they inhibit the formation of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids
- Polyphenol-rich foods: berries, cherries, green tea, dark chocolate – contain flavonoids with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
- Spices: turmeric (curcumin), ginger (gingerols), garlic – well-studied anti-inflammatory phytonutrients
- Extra virgin olive oil: rich in oleocanthal, which inhibits COX enzymes similarly to ibuprofen
- Vegetables and legumes: provide dietary fiber for a healthy microbiome and secondary plant compounds

- Sugar-rich foods and beverages
- Refined white flour products with a high glycemic index

Clinical Relevance
The concept of anti-inflammation has gained enormous importance in recent decades. Chronic, low-grade inflammation is now considered a contributing cause of many modern chronic diseases. Inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) are routinely measured to assess inflammatory status and cardiovascular risk. Anti-inflammatory strategies are therefore a central focus of modern preventive medicine.
