What Is the Weight Loss Injection for Diabetics?

The so-called weight loss injection for diabetics refers to a class of medications originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes that also cause significant weight reduction. The most well-known active ingredient in this class is semaglutide, used in products such as Ozempic (for diabetes) and Wegovy (for obesity). Other substances in this group include liraglutide (Victoza, Saxenda) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro).

These medications belong to the class of GLP-1 receptor agonists (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists) and mimic the action of a natural gut hormone released after eating.

Mechanism of Action

GLP-1 receptor agonists work on several levels in the body:

• Blood sugar control: They stimulate insulin secretion from the pancreas while inhibiting the release of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar.
• Appetite reduction: They act on the hunger centre in the brain, noticeably reducing feelings of hunger.
• Gastric emptying: They slow down gastric emptying, leading to a prolonged feeling of fullness.
• Caloric intake: Through the combination of these effects, patients consume fewer calories and lose weight.

Use in Diabetics

In people with type 2 diabetes, the weight loss injection is used to lower the HbA1c level (long-term blood sugar marker) and reduce body weight. Since obesity is a common cause and amplifier of type 2 diabetes, this combination offers a dual therapeutic benefit.

The injection is typically administered once weekly under the skin (subcutaneously), usually in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. The dosage is increased gradually to minimise side effects.

• Substantial weight loss (clinical studies show 10-15% body weight reduction)

Costs and Coverage

Coverage for the weight loss injection varies by country and health insurance provider. In many systems, it is reimbursed for type 2 diabetes patients when blood sugar control is insufficient despite other therapies. For weight loss alone without a diabetes diagnosis, coverage is generally not provided by public health insurers.
