What is Bioimmunology?
Bioimmunology is an interdisciplinary science that bridges biology and medicine to explore the molecular, cellular, and systemic mechanisms of the immune system. It investigates how the human body detects and responds to pathogens, foreign substances, and abnormal cells. By combining classical immunology with modern biotechnological methods, bioimmunology drives many of today´s most important medical advances.
Core Areas of Bioimmunology
Innate Immune System
The innate immune system serves as the body´s first line of defense. It responds rapidly and non-specifically to threats such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Key components include natural killer cells, macrophages, dendritic cells, and proteins of the complement system.
Adaptive Immune System
The adaptive immune system generates highly specific responses to particular antigens and forms immunological memory. B lymphocytes produce antibodies, while T lymphocytes either directly attack infected cells or coordinate immune responses. This system is the basis for long-term immunity after infection or vaccination.
Immune Tolerance and Autoimmunity
Immune tolerance refers to the immune system´s ability to distinguish between self and non-self, avoiding attacks on the body´s own tissues. When this tolerance breaks down, autoimmune diseases can develop. Examples include rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and systemic lupus erythematosus.
Applications of Bioimmunology
Bioimmunology provides the scientific foundation for a wide range of medical applications:

Bioimmunology relies on a broad spectrum of advanced laboratory and analytical techniques:
