Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine (BEMT) is a chemical UV filter used in sunscreens that protects the skin against both UV-A and UV-B radiation.
What is Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine?
Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, commonly abbreviated as BEMT and marketed under the trade name Tinosorb S, is a synthetically produced UV filter used in sunscreen and cosmetic products. It is classified as a broad-spectrum UV filter, meaning it absorbs both UV-A and UV-B radiation, thereby protecting the skin from light-induced damage.
BEMT belongs to the chemical class of triazine derivatives and is considered one of the most advanced and photostable UV filters currently available. It is approved for use in cosmetic products in the European Union under the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC No. 1223/2009).
Mechanism of Action
BEMT functions as a UV absorber. Its molecular structure absorbs UV radiation in the wavelength range of approximately 280 to 380 nanometers (nm) and converts the absorbed energy into harmless heat energy, which is then dissipated. This mechanism protects skin cells from the direct damaging effects of solar radiation, particularly UV-induced DNA damage, which can increase the risk of skin cancer over time.
A key advantage of BEMT over many other UV filters is its excellent photostability: the molecule retains its chemical structure under prolonged UV exposure, remaining effective over extended periods without breaking down into potentially harmful degradation products. Furthermore, BEMT has been shown to stabilize other, less photostable UV filters such as avobenzone, slowing their photodegradation.
Application and Occurrence
BEMT is incorporated into a wide range of cosmetic products, including:
- Sunscreen creams, lotions, and sprays
- Daily moisturizers with sun protection factor (SPF)
- Makeup products with integrated UV filters
- After-sun care products
In the EU, BEMT is listed in Annex VI of the EU Cosmetics Regulation and is permitted at a maximum concentration of 10% in finished cosmetic products. In the United States, BEMT has not yet been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an over-the-counter sunscreen active ingredient, and is therefore not permitted in sunscreen products sold in the US.
Safety and Tolerability
BEMT is considered well-tolerated and safe according to current dermatological research. Unlike some other chemical UV filters, BEMT shows no significant systemic absorption through the skin based on current evidence, meaning the compound does not enter the bloodstream in relevant amounts under normal use conditions.
Allergic reactions to BEMT are possible but rare. Individuals with known hypersensitivity to sunscreen ingredients are advised to perform a patch test or consult a dermatologist before use.
BEMT is water-resistant, making it suitable for sunscreen products used during sports activities or swimming.
Environmental Considerations
Like many chemical UV filters, BEMT is being studied for its potential effects on aquatic ecosystems. Current evidence suggests that BEMT exhibits lower aquatic toxicity compared to some other UV filters such as oxybenzone. Nevertheless, environmental organizations recommend reconsidering the use of chemical-based sunscreens in sensitive marine areas (e.g., near coral reefs) and considering mineral-based alternatives where appropriate.
