What is Deltamethrin?
Deltamethrin is a synthetically produced insecticide belonging to the pyrethroid class of compounds. It is one of the most widely used active ingredients for controlling insects such as mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, fleas, ticks, and other pests. Deltamethrin is applied in agriculture, domestic pest control, and medical prevention – most notably in programs targeting malaria-transmitting mosquitoes.
Mechanism of Action
Deltamethrin acts as a neurotoxin on the nervous systems of insects. It binds to voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cells and prevents their normal closure. This leads to sustained nerve stimulation, paralysis, and ultimately death of the insect. This mechanism is significantly less effective in vertebrates, as their sodium channels have a lower binding affinity for pyrethroids and their metabolic systems break down the compound more rapidly.

- Agriculture: Control of chewing and sucking pests on cereals, fruits, and vegetables.
- Public Health: Impregnation of mosquito nets (Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets, LLINs) for malaria prevention, and indoor residual spraying in endemic tropical regions.
- Household and Hygiene: Products for the elimination of cockroaches, fleas, bed bugs, and other household insects.
- Veterinary Medicine: Treatment of ectoparasites such as ticks and fleas in livestock.
Human Exposure and Toxicology
When used correctly, deltamethrin is considered relatively low in toxicity for humans and mammals. However, excessive or improper exposure can lead to signs of poisoning.
Possible Symptoms of Exposure
- Skin irritation, tingling, or burning at the site of contact (known as paresthesia)
- Irritation of the eyes and mucous membranes
- Nausea, dizziness, and headache following inhalation or oral ingestion
- In severe cases: tremors, convulsions, and impaired consciousness (in cases of massive poisoning)
At-Risk Groups
Young children, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing neurological conditions are at particular risk. People with heavy occupational exposure – such as farmers or pest control workers – should always use appropriate personal protective equipment.
Environmental and Ecotoxicological Considerations
Deltamethrin is highly toxic to aquatic organisms, especially fish and water-dwelling invertebrates. Bees and other pollinators can also be severely affected by direct contact. It is therefore essential to avoid application near bodies of water or during the flowering season of plants. In soil, deltamethrin is degraded relatively quickly through photolysis and microbial activity.
Regulation and Safety
Within the European Union, deltamethrin is approved as an active substance in plant protection products and is subject to strict regulations regarding application rates, pre-harvest intervals, and protective measures. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends deltamethrin as one of the preferred active ingredients for the impregnation of mosquito nets within malaria control programs.
