Bepanthen is a well-known wound care and skin care product based on dexpanthenol that supports skin regeneration and is used for dry, irritated, or damaged skin.
What is Bepanthen?
Bepanthen is a widely used product line by the pharmaceutical company Bayer, based on the active ingredient dexpanthenol. Dexpanthenol is a provitamin of pantothenic acid (Vitamin B5) and is converted in the skin into pantothenic acid, which is essential for cell growth and wound healing. Bepanthen is available in various forms, including ointment, cream, lotion, and eye drops.
Mechanism of Action
Once applied to the skin, dexpanthenol is enzymatically converted into pantothenic acid (Vitamin B5). Pantothenic acid is an essential component in the synthesis of Coenzyme A, which plays a central role in cellular metabolism. This process supports:
- Cell division and skin regeneration
- Collagen synthesis in connective tissue
- Moisture retention in the skin
- Restoration of the natural skin barrier
Indications and Uses
Wound and Healing Ointment
The classic Bepanthen Wound and Healing Ointment is used for:
- Minor wounds, abrasions, and cuts
- First-degree burns (including sunburn)
- Diaper rash in infants
- Dry, cracked, or irritated skin
- Aftercare following medical procedures such as tattooing or piercing
Bepanthen Eye Drops
The eye drop variant also contains dexpanthenol and is used for dry and irritated eyes, for example caused by screen use, air conditioning, or wind exposure.
Bepanthen Sensicure and Lotions
For sensitive or particularly dry skin, additional products such as Bepanthen Sensicure or body lotion are available. These provide intensive care and help strengthen the skin barrier over the long term.
Dosage and Application
Bepanthen ointment can be applied several times daily to the affected areas. No prescription is required; the product is freely available in pharmacies and drugstores. When used on infants and toddlers, the ointment should be applied thinly to the diaper area at each nappy change to help prevent skin irritation.
Tolerability and Side Effects
Bepanthen is generally considered well tolerated and is suitable for use in infants, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers. In very rare cases, allergic reactions such as skin redness or itching may occur. If a known hypersensitivity to dexpanthenol or any of the excipients exists, the product should not be used.
Important Notes
Bepanthen products are not a substitute for medical treatment in the case of serious wounds, deep burns, or infections. In cases of persistent symptoms or worsening skin conditions, medical advice should be sought promptly.
