A blood clot (medical term: thrombus) forms when blood thickens and clumps together inside a vessel.
While clotting is a natural protective mechanism to stop bleeding after injury, a clot can become dangerous if it blocks normal blood flowwithin the circulatory system. Blood clots most commonly occur in the deep veins of the legs, known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). If a clot breaks loose and travels to the lungs, it can cause a pulmonary embolism, a potentially life-threatening condition. Risk factors include immobility, surgery, obesity, smoking, and the use of hormonal medications.
Treatment depends on the location and severity of the clot. The standard therapy involves anticoagulants (blood thinners) to prevent growth and new clot formation. In addition, compression stockings and physical activity may help improve circulation. Early diagnosis is crucial to avoid complications such as embolism.
