Storing Breast Milk in the Refrigerator
Pumping and storing breast milk allows breastfeeding mothers to provide their baby with breast milk even when direct nursing is not possible. Proper refrigerator storage is essential to maintain the quality and safety of the milk.
How Long Does Breast Milk Last in the Refrigerator?
Freshly pumped breast milk can be safely stored in the refrigerator at a temperature of 2 to 4 °C (36 to 39 °F) for up to 72 hours (3 days). Some breastfeeding organizations suggest that milk stored at a consistently cold temperature of up to 4 °C may remain safe for up to 5 days. However, for maximum safety, it is recommended to use refrigerated breast milk within 3 days.
Correct Storage in the Refrigerator
- Store pumped breast milk in clean, sterile containers made of glass or food-grade plastic.
- Specially designed breast milk storage bags are also suitable and save space.
- Always seal containers or bags tightly and label them with the date and time of pumping.
- Do not store breast milk in the refrigerator door, as temperature fluctuations are greatest there. The back of the refrigerator is the coldest and most stable location.
- Avoid mixing breast milk pumped at different times unless both portions have been chilled to the same temperature beforehand.
Hygiene When Handling Breast Milk
Hygiene is especially important when pumping and storing breast milk. Key points to observe include:
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before pumping.
- Clean all pump parts that come into contact with milk after every use, and sterilize them regularly.
- Storage containers and bags should also be sterile before use.
Warming Refrigerated Breast Milk
Refrigerated breast milk should never be heated in a microwave, as this can cause uneven heating and may destroy important nutrients and antibodies. Instead, it is recommended to:
- Place the container in a bowl of warm (not boiling) water for a few minutes.
- Use a bottle warmer.
- Thaw frozen milk in the refrigerator overnight and then warm it in a water bath.
After warming, gently swirl (do not shake) the milk to remix the fat layer. Test the temperature by placing a few drops on your wrist – it should feel lukewarm, close to body temperature.
Freezing as an Alternative
If breast milk cannot be used within 3 days, it can be frozen. In a freezer at -18 °C (0 °F) or colder, pumped breast milk remains safe for up to 6 months, with some sources indicating up to 12 months. When freezing, leave about 2–3 cm of space at the top of the container, as liquids expand when frozen.
Quality Changes in Stored Breast Milk
Stored breast milk may change slightly in appearance and smell. Separation of layers, with fat rising to the top, is normal and does not indicate spoilage – simply swirl gently to recombine. A slightly soapy smell can develop due to the activity of the enzyme lipase, which breaks down fat. This is generally harmless for the baby. Breast milk that has truly spoiled will have a distinctly sour smell and should be discarded.
