Bronchitis is an inflammatory disease of the bronchi, the airways between the trachea and lungs. A distinction is made between acuteandchronic bronchitis. Acute bronchitis is usually caused by viruses and often occurs after a cold or flu. It mainly affects the lower respiratory tract and usually heals within a few weeks. In contrast, chronic bronchitis is a protracted illness characterised by a persistent cough and increased mucus production. It occurs for at least three months per year and is often associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
The symptoms of bronchitis vary depending on the form. Acute bronchitis usually begins with a dry, chesty cough, which later develops into a productive cough with yellow or greenish mucus. Sore throat, fatigue, shortness of breath and mild fever may also occur. Chronic bronchitis is characterised by a persistent cough, especially in the morning with copious sputum production, and can make breathing increasingly difficult in advanced stages.
The treatment depends on the cause and severity of the illness. As acute bronchitis is usually viral, it often heals without drug therapy. Supportive measures such as lots of fluids, expectorants, inhalations with steam or essential oils and cough suppressants can help to alleviate the symptoms. Antibiotics are only necessary if a bacterial infection is present. In chronic bronchitis, relieving the symptoms and slowing down the course of the disease are the main objectives. Bronchodilators dilate the airways, while corticosteroids can reduce inflammation. The most important measure is to quit smoking and avoid air pollution. Pulmonary rehabilitation can help to strengthen the respiratory muscles and improve quality of life.
Many health practitioners and holistic doctors rely on Lactoferrin to support the respiratory tract, as it has anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating properties. In addition, vitamin C, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids can strengthen the immune system and help prevent respiratory infections. A healthy, nutrient-rich diet with antioxidant foods contributes to the regeneration of mucous membranes and supports respiratory health.
