What is Calcium Hydroxide?
Calcium hydroxide (chemical formula: Ca(OH)2) is an inorganic compound composed of calcium, oxygen, and hydrogen. It is produced by reacting calcium oxide (quicklime) with water, which is why it is also commonly known as slaked lime or hydrated lime. The substance appears as a white, powdery solid and is sparingly soluble in water. Its aqueous solution, known as limewater, is strongly alkaline with a pH of approximately 12.4.
Medical and Dental Applications
Calcium hydroxide has a long history of use in modern medicine and especially in dentistry as a therapeutic and disinfecting agent.
Dental Applications
- Direct and indirect pulp capping: Calcium hydroxide is applied to the dental pulp to encourage regeneration and stimulate the formation of reparative dentin.
- Root canal treatment: Used as a temporary intracanal dressing between appointments, it provides strong antibacterial activity and neutralizes acids within the root canal.
- Apexification: In teeth with incompletely formed roots, calcium hydroxide promotes closure of the root apex.
- Disinfection: Due to its high pH, it effectively destroys bacteria, viruses, and fungi within the root canal system.
Other Medical Uses
- Incorporation into medical dressings and wound care products.
- Use in dermatology as a mild caustic agent for certain skin conditions.
Mechanism of Action
The therapeutic effects of calcium hydroxide are based on two main mechanisms:
- Alkaline action: The high pH (approximately 12.4) disrupts microbial cell membranes and inhibits microbial metabolism, resulting in reliable antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal activity.
- Mineralizing action: Calcium hydroxide releases free calcium ions that stimulate hard tissue formation (dentin, bone). It activates alkaline phosphatases and promotes tissue mineralization.
Use in the Food Industry
In the food industry, calcium hydroxide is approved as food additive E526. It functions as an acidity regulator, firming agent, and raising agent. Common applications include:
- Processing of corn into tortillas and other corn-based products through a process known as nixtamalization, which significantly improves nutrient bioavailability.
- Production of certain types of cheese and canned goods.
- Water treatment for pH regulation.
Safety and Risks
Although calcium hydroxide can be safely used in controlled amounts, certain precautions are necessary:
- Tissue irritation: At high concentrations, calcium hydroxide can irritate or chemically burn mucous membranes, skin, and eyes.
- Inhalation: Inhaling calcium hydroxide dust can irritate the respiratory tract and should be avoided.
- Ingestion: Larger quantities may cause irritation to the mucous membranes of the mouth, throat, and gastrointestinal tract.
- In dentistry, the substance is used exclusively by trained professionals in controlled concentrations and quantities.
