What Is a Capsomere?
A capsomere is a structural subunit made up of multiple protein molecules that serves as the fundamental building block of the viral capsid. The capsid is the protein shell that surrounds and protects the genetic material of a virus – either DNA or RNA. Numerous capsomeres assemble in a highly specific geometric pattern to form the complete capsid of a viral particle.
Structure and Composition
Each capsomere is composed of a defined number of identical or closely related protein molecules, commonly referred to as capsid proteins or structural proteins. These individual proteins are held together by non-covalent interactions such as hydrophobic bonds, hydrogen bonds, and ionic interactions.
Icosahedral Viruses
