- Monocytes: Phagocytic cells that engulf pathogens and cellular debris (2–8%).
- Eosinophils: Elevated in allergic diseases and parasitic infections (1–4%).
- Basophils: The rarest leukocyte type, involved in allergic and inflammatory reactions (0–1%).
When is a Complete Blood Count Ordered?
A CBC is requested in a wide variety of clinical situations, including:

How is the Test Performed?

If abnormal cells are detected, a trained laboratory specialist may perform a manual microscopic examination of a blood smear for further evaluation.
Interpreting the Results
CBC results must always be interpreted in the context of the full clinical picture. Common patterns include:
- Elevated white blood cells (leukocytosis) with neutrophilia: Often indicates a bacterial infection or inflammation.
- Elevated lymphocytes (lymphocytosis): Typical of viral infections such as infectious mononucleosis.
- Elevated eosinophils (eosinophilia): Associated with allergies, asthma, or parasitic infections.
- Low white blood cells (leukopenia): May indicate bone marrow disorders, viral illness, or medication side effects.
- Low red blood cells and hemoglobin: Characteristic of various forms of anemia.
- Elevated platelets (thrombocytosis): Can occur in inflammatory conditions or blood disorders.
Normal Reference Ranges
Reference ranges may vary slightly between laboratories and depend on age and sex. Typical adult values include:
