Digestion is a complex biological process in which the body breaks down the ingested food into usable nutrients and utilises them for energy, cell building and metabolic processes.
Digestion starts in the mouth, where food is mechanically broken down by chewing and mixed with saliva. The enzyme amylase contained in the saliva initiates the first splitting of the carbohydrates. The chyme then passes through the oesophagus into the stomach, where it is further broken down by gastric acid (hydrochloric acid) and digestive enzymes. Proteins in particular are broken down into smaller components by the enzyme pepsin. The aggressive stomach acid also ensures that harmful bacteria are killed. On average, the entire digestive process from food intake to excretion takes between 24 and 72 hours.
.The majority of digestion takes place in the small intestine. This is where enzymes are released from the pancreas, which break down carbohydrates, fats and proteins into their smallest components. At the same time, the liver releases bile juice via the gallbladder, which is important for fat digestion and emulsifies the fats, making them available for the fat-splitting enzymes. The now dissolved nutrients, including amino acids, fatty acids, simple sugars, vitamins and minerals, are absorbed via the villi of the small intestine into the bloodstream and transported to the organs. Indigestible food residues and fibre enter the large intestine, where water and electrolytes are removed from the chyme. At the same time, the intestinal flora (microbiome) plays an important role by fermenting indigestible food components and producing short-chain fatty acids and vitamins in the process. The remaining residues are finally excreted in the stool.
Healthy digestion is crucial for general well-being and the supply of nutrients. A balanced diet with sufficient fibre, plenty of fluids and regular exercise support normal bowel function. Fibre from wholegrain products, vegetables, fruit and pulses stimulates intestinal activity and serves as food for healthy intestinal bacteria.
Probiotics (live microorganisms) and prebiotics (dietary fibres that promote the growth of beneficial bacteria) can help maintain healthy intestinal flora. Lactoferrin, an iron-binding protein, has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties and can also help to protect the balance of the intestinal flora and the mucous membrane. Digestive enzymes as a dietary supplement can also help if the body's own production is limited.
