What Is Diaphragmatic Breathing?
Diaphragmatic breathing – also referred to as belly breathing or abdominal breathing – is a method of breathing in which the diaphragm, a large dome-shaped muscle located between the chest and abdominal cavities, serves as the primary muscle of respiration. Unlike shallow chest breathing, diaphragmatic breathing allows for a deeper, more efficient ventilation of the lungs and is considered the most natural form of human breathing.
Mechanism of Action
During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward, expanding the thoracic cavity and drawing air deep into the lungs. The abdomen visibly rises as this happens. During exhalation, the diaphragm relaxes, rises back to its resting position, and air is expelled from the lungs, causing the abdomen to fall.
- Increased lung volume: The diaphragm expands the intrathoracic space more effectively than the intercostal (rib) muscles alone.
- Improved gas exchange: Deep breaths promote oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange in the lower lung segments.

In cognitive-behavioral therapy and the management of anxiety disorders and stress-related conditions, diaphragmatic breathing is used as a relaxation technique. It lowers heart rate and blood pressure and reduces the release of stress hormones such as cortisol.
Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation
Following abdominal or thoracic surgery, and in the treatment of back pain or postural dysfunction, targeted diaphragmatic breathing training is used to improve posture and strengthen the deep core stabilizer muscles.

How to Practice Diaphragmatic Breathing
Diaphragmatic breathing can be learned and trained with consistent practice. A simple exercise works as follows:
- Lie comfortably on your back or sit upright in a chair.
- Place one hand on your abdomen and the other on your chest.
- Inhale slowly through your nose and observe your belly rising, while your chest remains relatively still.
- Exhale slowly through your mouth or nose and feel your belly fall.
- Repeat for 5 to 10 minutes daily to internalize the technique.
