What is Dolo Dobendan?
Dolo Dobendan is an over-the-counter throat lozenge used to relieve sore throat pain and fight bacteria in the mouth and throat. It contains two active ingredients: benzocaine, a local anaesthetic, and cetylpyridinium chloride, an antiseptic agent. The product is commonly used for inflammatory conditions of the oral cavity and pharynx.
Active Ingredients and Mechanism of Action
Benzocaine
Benzocaine belongs to the class of local anaesthetics (ester type). It works by blocking sodium channels in the nerve cells of the throat mucosa, thereby inhibiting the transmission of pain signals. This results in rapid, localised pain relief in the throat and pharynx.
Cetylpyridinium Chloride
Cetylpyridinium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound with antiseptic properties. It disrupts the cell membranes of bacteria and some fungi, reducing microbial growth in the throat. It is primarily effective against gram-positive bacteria.
Indications
Dolo Dobendan is used for:
- Acute sore throat
- Inflammation of the throat lining (pharyngitis)
- Inflammatory conditions of the mouth and throat
- Difficulty swallowing due to throat irritation
Dosage and Administration
Dolo Dobendan lozenges are dissolved slowly in the mouth. For adults and adolescents aged 12 and above, the usual dose is one lozenge every 2 to 3 hours, with a maximum of 6 lozenges per day. Always follow the instructions in the package leaflet or consult a pharmacist or doctor. The medication should not be used for more than 3 days without medical advice.
Side Effects
Dolo Dobendan is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects may include:
- Temporary numbness or tingling in the mouth and throat
- Hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., skin rash, itching) in rare cases of allergy to the active ingredients
- Rarely: irritation of the oral mucosa
The product should not be used by people with a known allergy to benzocaine or other ester-type local anaesthetics.
Contraindications and Warnings
Dolo Dobendan should not be used in cases of:
- Known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients
- Children under 12 years of age (without medical recommendation)
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding (only after consulting a doctor)
If a sore throat is accompanied by high fever, severely swollen lymph nodes, or significant difficulty swallowing, a doctor should be consulted promptly, as a bacterial infection such as streptococcal tonsillitis may be present and require antibiotic treatment.
