What Is a Ductus?
The term ductus originates from Latin and means duct, canal, or passage. In medicine and anatomy, it refers to tube-shaped structures in the human body that transport fluids such as bile, lymph, glandular secretions, or blood from one location to another. The plural form is ductus (unchanged in Latin) or ducts in English.
Anatomical Significance
Ductus structures are found in nearly every organ system. Depending on their location and function, they serve very different purposes:
- Ductus choledochus (common bile duct): Carries bile from the liver and gallbladder into the duodenum (small intestine).
- Ductus pancreaticus (pancreatic duct): The main excretory duct of the pancreas, through which digestive enzymes are delivered to the intestine.
- Ductus thoracicus (thoracic duct): The largest lymphatic vessel in the body, returning lymph from most of the body into the venous bloodstream.
- Ductus arteriosus (of Botallo): A fetal vascular connection between the pulmonary artery and the aorta, which normally closes shortly after birth.
- Ductus deferens (vas deferens): The male reproductive duct that carries sperm from the testes to the urethra.
- Ductus lactiferus (lactiferous duct): Milk ducts in the female breast that carry breast milk to the nipple.

Diseases affecting a ductus can have significant health consequences. Some medically important examples include:
Ductus Obstructions
Narrowing or blockage of a ductus -- such as gallstones in the ductus choledochus -- can lead to backflow, inflammation (e.g., cholangitis), or jaundice (icterus).
Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)
In patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), the fetal vascular connection between the aorta and pulmonary artery fails to close after birth. This is a common congenital heart defect that may require medical or surgical treatment depending on its severity.
Ductus Carcinomas
Malignant tumors can develop within ductus structures, for example the ductal carcinoma of the breast (originating from the milk ducts) or bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma).
Diagnosis of Ductus Disorders
Various diagnostic methods are used to evaluate ductus structures:
- Ultrasound (sonography): Often the first method used to assess bile ducts and other ductus structures.
- MRI / MRCP: Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography provides detailed imaging of the bile ducts and pancreatic duct.
- ERCP: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography allows both diagnosis and therapeutic interventions (e.g., stone removal).
- Echocardiography: Standard method for diagnosing patent ductus arteriosus.
Treatment
Treatment of ductus disorders depends on the specific structure involved and the nature of the condition. Possible approaches include:
- Medical therapy (e.g., indomethacin or ibuprofen for PDA)
- Endoscopic procedures (e.g., stent placement for bile duct stenosis)
- Surgical intervention (e.g., resection for cholangiocarcinoma)
- Interventional procedures (e.g., catheter-based closure for PDA)
