Hemp protein - vegetable protein with fibre
Hemp protein provides vegetable protein, omega fatty acids and fibre - but has a limited amino acid balance. Ideal for a vegan diet, but not for muscle building alone.

Hemp protein is obtained from the seeds of the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa) and is a natural, plant-based source of protein with a remarkably high content of fibre, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids.
Hemp protein contains around 40-50% protein, is naturally gluten-free, easily digestible and also contains omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in the ideal ratio. Nevertheless, hemp protein also has some limitations that make it less efficient than animal or some plant-based alternatives, especially for sports or targeted muscle building.
Although hemp protein contains all eight essential amino acids, it is particularly low in lysine - an important amino acid for tissue repair, the immune system and muscle regeneration. As a result, the biological value of hemp protein is significantly lower than that of whey protein, egg white or soya. Protein availability is also limited due to the high proportion of indigestible fibre, which can affect overall absorption in the intestine.
Hemp protein is nevertheless a valuable addition to a vegan or vegetarian diet, especially for people who value natural, unprocessed protein sources with additional micronutrients. It is ideal in combination with other plant-based proteins such as pea, rice or pumpkin seed to achieve a better amino acid balance.
Important characteristics of hemp protein:
- Rich in fibre, omega fatty acids, iron, magnesium
- Contains all essential amino acids, but little lysine
- Low biological value, less efficient for muscle building
- Earthy flavour, partly gritty consistency
- Good for natural, vegan nutrition, easier to utilise in combination
