Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that mainly affects the face and is characterised by persistent redness, visible veins, pustules and skin irritation.
Rosacea often occurs between the ages of 30 and 50 and mainly affects fair-skinned people of the Celtic type (fair skin, red hair, blue/green/grey eye colour) rather than Mediterranean skin types.
The exact causes are not yet fully understood, but scientists assume a combination of genetic predisposition, dysfunctional immune processes and external influencing factors. Dysregulation of the immune system causes the skin to react hypersensitively to stimuli and become inflamed. In addition, increased colonisation of the skin with demodex mites and certain bacteria such as Cutibacterium acnes is associated with rosacea. Impaired circulation and gut health could also play a role.
Rosacea manifests itself in various forms, from mild redness to thickening of the skin, particularly around the nose or inflammation of the eyes in ocular rosacea. The disease cannot be cured, but can be well controlled with targeted measures. Mild, non-irritating skin care without aggressive ingredients and medical treatments such as anti-inflammatory creams, antibiotics or laser therapies can help to alleviate the symptoms. An anti-inflammatory diet with omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, zinc and probiotics can also have a supportive effect, as a connection between gut health and skin diseases is suspected. A conscious approach to triggers such as spicy food, alcohol, stress, severe temperature fluctuations or unsuitable cosmetics can help to prevent flare-ups and soothe the skin in the long term.
