What is SAR (Specific Absorption Rate)?
The SAR, or Specific Absorption Rate, is a physical measurement that describes how much energy from electromagnetic fields – particularly high-frequency radiation – is absorbed per unit mass of biological tissue. The unit used is watts per kilogram (W/kg).
In everyday life, SAR is most commonly associated with mobile phones: every device must comply with legally mandated SAR limits to minimize potential health risks from electromagnetic radiation.
Clinical and Regulatory Significance
SAR plays a key role in radiation protection medicine and the regulatory evaluation of devices that generate electromagnetic fields (EMF). It is relevant in both mobile communications technology and medical imaging, especially magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
- In the European Union, the SAR limit for mobile phones is 2.0 W/kg, measured over 10 grams of tissue.
- In the United States, the limit is 1.6 W/kg, measured over 1 gram of tissue.
- In MRI examinations, SAR is used as a safety monitoring parameter to prevent excessive tissue heating.
How is SAR Measured?
SAR is measured using standardized testing procedures. A so-called phantom – a model of the human body filled with a tissue-simulating liquid – is used. Probe sensors measure the electric field strength inside the phantom, and the absorbed energy is then calculated from these values.

- Transmission power of the device
- Frequency of the electromagnetic waves
- Distance between the device and the body
- Tissue properties such as water content and electrical conductivity
SAR in MRI Examinations
In magnetic resonance imaging, SAR is a central safety parameter. The radiofrequency pulses used during MRI scans can generate heat in body tissue. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) defines specific SAR limits to prevent dangerous increases in body temperature. Medical professionals continuously monitor SAR values throughout the procedure.
Health Assessment
Based on current scientific evidence, no proven health hazards from mobile phone radiation are expected when legal SAR limits are observed. The World Health Organization (WHO) and national radiation protection agencies emphasize, however, that further research – particularly into long-term effects – remains important.
As a precautionary measure, authorities still recommend simple steps:
- Use hands-free devices or headphones
- Keep the device at a distance from the body
- Make calls when signal reception is strong, as devices emit more power in areas of low reception
