Soledum forte is a herbal medicinal product whose active ingredient is cineole (also known as eucalyptol), derived from eucalyptus oil. It is used in the treatment of respiratory tract conditions and is available as gastro-resistant capsules. Each Soledum forte capsule contains 200 mg of cineole as the active substance.
Indications
Soledum forte is indicated for:
- Acute and chronic bronchitis (inflammation of the bronchial tubes)
- Sinusitis (inflammation of the paranasal sinuses)
- Diseases of the upper and lower respiratory tract associated with increased mucus production
- Supporting mucolytic action and facilitating expectoration
Mechanism of Action
The active ingredient cineole (eucalyptol) acts on several levels:
- Secretolytic: Cineole thins viscous mucus in the airways, facilitating its clearance via the mucociliary transport system.
- Anti-inflammatory: Cineole inhibits pro-inflammatory mediators such as leukotrienes and cytokines, thereby reducing mucosal inflammation.
- Bronchospasmolytic: The active ingredient relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, easing breathing.
- Antimicrobial: In-vitro studies have demonstrated inhibitory activity against certain bacteria and viruses.
Dosage and Administration
The standard adult dosage is 1 capsule of Soledum forte (200 mg cineole) three times daily, taken before meals with sufficient liquid. The capsules are gastro-resistant and must not be opened, chewed, or crushed, ensuring the active substance is released in the small intestine.
The duration of treatment should be determined in consultation with a physician. If symptoms persist for more than one week, medical advice should be sought.
Contraindications
Soledum forte should not be used in cases of:
- Known hypersensitivity to cineole or any of the excipients
- Children under 12 years of age (specific lower-dose preparations are available for younger children)
- Severe liver disease
- Bile duct disorders or gallstones
- Gastric ulcers or other severe gastrointestinal diseases
Side Effects
Soledum forte is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects may include:
- Occasional: gastrointestinal complaints such as nausea, heartburn, or diarrhoea
- Rare: allergic reactions (e.g., skin rash, itching)
- In isolated cases: headaches

Interactions

Special Patient Populations
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: The use of Soledum forte during pregnancy and breastfeeding should only take place following consultation with a physician, as sufficient safety data are not available.
- Children and adolescents: Soledum forte (200 mg) is not suitable for children under 12 years of age. Lower-dose cineole preparations are available for younger children.
- Elderly patients: No special precautions are generally required, but renal and hepatic function should be taken into account.
