Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol (also known as a polyol) that occurs naturally in stone fruit such as apples, pears and plums.
In the food industry, sorbitol is used as a sugar-free or "light" products such as chewing gum, sweets or diet foods.
Sorbitol is also a humectant and stabiliser, which also makes it useful in toothpastes and cosmetics. However, if consumed in excess, sorbitol can have a laxative effect, as it is only partially absorbed in the small intestine and binds water in the large intestine, triggering fermentation processes.
