What Is a Spinal Cord Injury?
A spinal cord injury (SCI) refers to damage to the spinal cord, the main bundle of nerves that runs from the brain down through the vertebral column. The spinal cord transmits nerve signals between the brain and the rest of the body. Damage to this delicate tissue can cause permanent or temporary impairments in motor function, sensation, and the control of internal organs.
