What Is a Nosebleed?
A nosebleed (medically known as epistaxis) occurs when blood flows from one or both nostrils. Most nosebleeds originate at the front of the nasal septum, where a dense network of small blood vessels lies just beneath the mucous membrane. In the majority of cases, nosebleeds are harmless and can be managed at home.
Causes of Nosebleeds
Nosebleeds can have a variety of causes. The most common include:
- Dry nasal mucosa – especially in winter or in heated indoor environments
- Physical irritation – nose picking, blowing the nose forcefully, or facial injuries
- Infections – colds or sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses)
- Allergies – such as hay fever
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Blood-thinning medications – such as aspirin or warfarin
- Less commonly: clotting disorders or nasal tumours
How to Stop a Nosebleed – First Aid Step by Step
The following steps will help you stop a nosebleed quickly and safely:
1. Take the Correct Position
Sit upright and lean your head slightly forward – never backward. Leaning forward prevents blood from flowing down the throat, which could cause nausea or, in rare cases, breathing difficulties.
2. Pinch the Nose
Using your thumb and index finger, firmly pinch the soft part of the nose (below the nasal bone). Maintain continuous pressure for at least 10 to 15 minutes without releasing. Breathe through your mouth during this time.
3. Apply a Cold Compress
Placing a cold compress or ice pack (wrapped in a cloth) on the bridge of the nose or the back of the neck can help constrict blood vessels and slow the bleeding.
4. Moisturise the Nasal Mucosa
Once the bleeding has stopped, apply a saline nasal spray or a moisturising nasal ointment (e.g., containing dexpanthenol) to help keep the mucous membrane from drying out and re-bleeding.
What NOT to Do During a Nosebleed
- Do not tilt the head back – blood can flow into the stomach and cause nausea
- Do not blow the nose – this can dislodge forming blood clots
- Do not stand up and walk around immediately – rest supports clot formation
- Do not insert cotton wool deep into the nose – this can damage the nasal lining
When to See a Doctor
Seek medical attention in the following situations:
- The bleeding does not stop after 20 to 30 minutes
- The blood flow is very heavy or pulsating
- The nosebleed follows a head or facial injury
- Nosebleeds recur frequently without an obvious cause
- The person is taking blood-thinning medication
- Additional symptoms occur, such as dizziness, pallor, or loss of consciousness
Preventing Nosebleeds
To reduce the risk of nosebleeds, consider the following preventive measures:
- Use a humidifier, especially during the heating season
- Regularly moisturise the nasal mucosa with ointments or saline sprays
- Blow your nose gently – one nostril at a time
- Stay well hydrated to keep mucous membranes moist
- Have your blood pressure checked regularly
