Treatment and Prevention
Treatment of vitamin D deficiency depends on the severity of the deficiency and its underlying causes:
- Sun exposure: Regular time outdoors with uncovered skin (face, hands, arms) for approximately 15 to 30 minutes daily during summer months helps the body produce vitamin D naturally.
- Diet: Eating foods rich in vitamin D -- such as fatty fish (salmon, herring, mackerel), egg yolk, liver, and fortified foods -- can help improve levels.
- Supplements: In confirmed cases of deficiency, doctors often recommend vitamin D3 supplements. When the body cannot produce sufficient amounts on its own, a daily intake of 800 IU (20 µg) is commonly recommended for adults. Higher doses may be prescribed for severe deficiency but should always be supervised by a healthcare professional.
